How to check your camera inside Zoom

  1. Open Zoom settings. In the Zoom desktop app, click your profile picture, then Settings, then Video & effects (called Video in older versions). Your camera preview appears at the top.
  2. Pick the right camera. If you have more than one, choose it from the Camera list. Use HD if your connection is good.
  3. Check Original ratio. With Original ratio off, Zoom sends a 16:9 picture. That is the crop this page shows.
  4. Mirror is only for you. Mirror my video changes only your self-view. Other people always see you unmirrored.
  5. Use low-light and touch-up settings sparingly. Adjust for low light helps in a dim room. Touch up my appearance softens skin, but strong settings look blurry.
  6. Join a test meeting. Zoom's own test page, zoom.us/test, joins you to a test meeting to check your speaker, mic and camera.

Zoom camera questions

How do I test my camera before a Zoom meeting?

Open this page and press Turn camera on to see your picture cropped the way Zoom shows it, with a lighting check. In the Zoom app you can also open Settings > Video & effects for a preview, or go to zoom.us/test to join a test meeting.

Why is my video cropped on Zoom?

Zoom sends video in a wide 16:9 shape and gallery view fits each person into a tile. If your camera is 4:3 or a phone held upright, the edges are cut off. Keep your face in the middle of the 16:9 frame on this page and nothing important is lost.

Do people on Zoom see me mirrored?

No. Zoom shows you a mirrored self-view by default, but everyone else sees you the right way round. Turn off Mirror self-view here to see what they see.

Why do I look bad on Zoom?

It is usually the light and the angle. A window behind you makes your face dark, and a laptop camera below eye level looks up at you. Face the light and raise the camera to eye level.

Why does Zoom say it cannot detect my camera?

Another app may be using the camera, or Zoom does not have camera permission. Quit other video apps, then check your system camera privacy settings for Zoom. If this page can see your camera but Zoom cannot, the problem is Zoom's permission.
